Chargers Sign HC Mike McCoy To Extension Through 2017

Update:

The San Diego Chargers announced Friday that they’ve signed HC Mike McCoy to a contract extension through the 2017 season.

This is just a one-year extension, but it will prevent McCoy from being a lame-duck coach heading into the 2016 season.

The Chargers could, of course, still move on from McCoy, should they continue to struggle next year.

Chargers GM Tom Telesco says that it was McCoy’s decision to relieve six assistant coaches of their positions.

Jason La Canfora reports that the Chargers will formalize their decision to retain Mike McCoy as head coach with an announcement likely today.

  • Multiple sources have already confirmed the news.

Initially reports indicated that McCoy was likely out in San Diego. However, Michael Gehlken of the Union Tribune reported a few days that the Chargers are were instead expected to retain McCoy.

The decision to keep McCoy is likely to come at the expense of a few assistant coaches currently on his staff. Recent reports have said that as many three or four assistants could be replaced on McCoy’s staff.

Philip Rivers told reporters on Friday that McCoy isn’t the problem and moving on from him is “crazy.”

Mike’s not the problem,” Rivers said Friday. “It’s not like, ‘Oh, if it was another head coach who wasn’t Mike, this team would’ve donethat.’ Nah. That’s crazy. That’s a crazy assessment.”

Since taking the Chargers job in 2013, McCoy has led them to a record of 22-26 (45.8 percent) including one playoff win. He’s posted back-to-back seasons with a 9-7 record.
