Chargers Sign K Nick Novak, Waive K Younghoe Koo

The San Diego Chargers announced Thursday that they’ve signed K Nick Novak and waived K Younghoe Koo.

Koo has had some notable misses this year including one that was blocked against the Broncos that would have tied the game and a potential game-winner against the Dolphins

Novak, 35, was a somewhat surprising cut from the Chargers at the start of the 2015 year. However, he managed to catch on with the Texans midseason and re-signed with the team following that season.

Novak finished a one-year, $965,000 contract with the Texans and was re-signed by the team to a one-year, $1.15 million contract. Unfortunately, the Texans released him coming out of the preseason.

In 2016, Novak appeared in all 16 games for the Texans and converted 35 field goals on 41 attempts (85.4 percent). He also recorded 22 extra points on 25 attempts (88 percent) and 23 touchbacks.

Koo, 23, wound up signing a three-year, $1.66 million contract with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia Southern back in May. He stands set to make base salaries of $465,000 and $555,000 over the first two years of the contract.

In 2017, Koo has appeared in four games for the Chargers and converted just three of six field goal attempts and all nine extra point tries.
