Chargers Signed TE John Phillips & Waived OT Tyreek Burwell

Eric D. Williams of ESPN reports that the Chargers have signed TE John Phillips and waived OT Tyreek Burwell.

With the looming suspension of Antonio Gates, the addition of Phillips brings depth to the tight end position.

Phillips, 28, gets re-signed by the Chargers after being waived during last weeks roster cuts. He has been apart of the Cowboys from 2009-2012, and has been with the Chargers for the past two seasons. Interesting enough, Phillips was noticed as a candidate to gain playing time during Gates‘ suspension.

Burwell, 23, is an undrafted free agent out of the University of Cincinnati. San Diego signed Burwell to a three-year, $1.585 million contract, with a $10,000 signing bonus.

According to Over The Cap, the Chargers create $428,333 in cap space and $10,000 in dead money by releasing him.
