Chargers Sign Franchise DE Melvin Ingram To Four-Year, $66M Deal

Update:

The Los Angeles Chargers have already announced their new four-year agreement with DE Melvin Ingram.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Chargers signing franchise DE Melvin Ingram to a four-year, $66 million extension that includes $42 million guaranteed.

  • Ian Rapoport mentions that Ingram was targeting the $16.5 million per year Chandler Jones got from the Cardinals and managed to get the same annual salary from Los Angeles.

There had been some talk that Ingram may not get a new deal before the start of the 2017 and may have to play out the year under the franchise tag. However, it appears that won’t be the case.

Ingram will transition to defensive end for the Chargers in 2017 now that they’ve hired Gus Bradley to run their defense, but that shouldn’t be a big issue for him.

Ingram, 28, was taken No. 18 overall during the 2012 NFL draft. He played out his four-year, $8.39 million rookie contract that included 7.61 million guaranteed before the Chargers picked up his fifth-year option that paid him $7,751,000 for the 2017 season.

Los Angeles franchised Ingram several months ago at the cost of $15.701 million fully guaranteed for the 2017 season.

In 2016, Ingram appeared in all 16 games for the Chargers and recorded 60 tackles, eight sacks, five forced fumbles and five pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 6 edge rusher out of 109 qualifying players.
