Chargers Signing WR James Jones To One-Year Contract

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Chargers are signing veteran WR James Jones to a contract on Tuesday.

  • Jones tells Josina Anderson that he receives a one-year contract from the Chargers.

Jones was among three receivers brought in for workouts this morning, including Brian Hartline and Lance Moore.

Rapoport mentioned earlier in the day Jones was a “strong option” the Chargers, especially after the news that WR Stevie Johnson is likely to undergo surgery for a torn meniscus, and could be out an extended period of time.

Jones gets to stay on the West Coast, which he previously said was his preference, and join a solid offensive attack in San Diego.

Jones, 32, is a former third-round pick of the Packers back in 2007. He spent seven years with the Packers before signing on with the Raiders as an unrestricted free agent in 2014.

Jones later returned to the Packers after they lost Jordy Nelson for the season last year and went on to produce a productive season for Green Bay.

In 2015, Jones appeared in all 16 games for the Packers and recorded 50 receptions for 890 yards receiving and eight touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 45 receiver out of 121 qualifying players.

We had him featured in our Best Available Free Agents list.
