Chargers Still Considering The Franchise Tag For Vincent Jackson

Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports reports that one AFC executive believes that the Chargers will ultimately use their franchise tag on WR Vincent Jackson despite the fact that they’ve remained reluctant to do so.

I know there are seven or eight teams lined up for Jackson, but I think [GM A.J. Smith] is going to tag him,” said the AFC exec. “That would be a total A.J. move, plus I think he’s going to have a hard time with the fan base if they let [Jackson] go.

This is no doubt a difficult decision for Chargers GM A.J. Smith as tagging him for the second straight season would cost the team close to $14 million. Recent reports have suggested that the two sides are working on a contract extension and even mentioned that Jackson would like to stay in San Diego. This will certainly be a situation to monitor over the weekend.
