Chargers Waive RB Andre Williams, Promote TE Asante Cleveland

The San Diego Chargers announced Saturday that they’ve have promoted TE Asante Cleveland from their practice squad and waived RB Andre Williams.

Williams, 24, if a former fourth-round pick by the Giants of the 2014 NFL Draft. He is in the second year a four-year, $2,673,600 rookie contract and set to earn a base salary of $600,000 for 2016.

The Giants waived Williams coming out of the preseason and he was later claimed by the Chargers.

In 2015, Williams appeared in all 16 games for the Giants and recorded 257 yards on 88 carries (2.9 YPC) and scored one rushing touchdown. He also caught one pass for seven receiving yards.

Cleveland, 24, originally signed on with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of Miami (FL) back in May of last year. He spent a good majority of last year on the team’s practice squad.

The Patriots traded for him in August, but he was, unfortunately, unable to make the team’s 53-man roster coming out of the preseason. New England later signed him to their practice squad before cutting him loose midseason.

The Chargers wound up claiming him off of waivers only to cut him loose coming out of the preseason. Cleveland was later signed to their practice squad.

In 2015, Cleveland appeared in four games and recorded a single reception for one yard receiving and no touchdowns for the Patriots.
