“A Lot Of Positive Momentum” In Contract Talks Between Chargers & DE Corey Liuget

Update:

Michael Gehlken of Union-Tribune San Diego updates contract talks between the Chargers and DE Corey Liuget by reporting that there has been “a lot of positive momentum” towards an agreement.

According to Gehlken, San Diego and Liuget’s representatives are getting closer to having a finalized deal in place that would prevent him from testing the free agent market next year.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Chargers are quietly working on a contract extension for DE Corey Liuget.

  • According to Rapoport, addressing Liuget’s contract is viewed as a “priority” for the Chargers.

San Diego is also trying to get QB Philip Rivers and S Eric Weddle under contract as well, but this is the first we’ve heard of the Chargers prioritize a new deal for Liuget.

Liuget, 25, had his fifth-year option picked up by the Chargers last April and now stands to make a base salary of $6.969 million for the 2015 season.

In 2014, Liuget appeared in all 16 games for the Chargers and recorded 57 tackles, five sacks, two forced fumbles, two recoveries including one for a touchdown and two pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 25 defensive end in a 3-4 system out of 47 qualifying players.
