Chargers & WR Keenan Allen In Talks Regarding Extension, SD Offering Over $10M Per

Update:

Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports reports that the Chargers are offering WR Keenan Allen north of $10 million per year in a new extension after they started out lower than that.

  • Garafolo gets the sense that the gap between the two parties isn’t too wide.

Conor Orr of NFL.com, citing multiple sources, reports that the Chargers and WR Keenan Allen have been in talks regarding a potential four- or five-year extension.

  • Michael Gehlken confirms that the two parties are in talks, but the situation is still developing.

It’s been a while since we last heard anything about a potential extension for Allen.

Back in early March, Michael Gehlken of the Union-Tribune reported that the Chargers were expected to open extension talks with Allen after this year’s draft, so it appears as though San Diego is sticking to this plan.

Chargers GM Tom Telesco mentioned at the Combine that their focus remains on addressing their free agents and other players available in this year’s market, but they’ll eventually get around to new contracts for some of their players.

We’re going to concentrate right now on our impending free agents and potential outside free agents,” Telesco said. “Then the draft, and we’ll go from there.

There’s no question that Allen has earned a long-term deal. He’s clearly the future of the Chargers’ offense now that Antonio Gates is coming to the end of his NFL career and Malcolm Floyd is expected to retire.

Allen, 24, was taken in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Chargers. He’s currently in the final year of his four-year, $2.81 million rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $675,000 for the 2016 season.

In 2015, Allen was limited to appearing in eight games due to a lacerated kidney he suffered midseason. He finished the year catching 67 passes for 725 yards receiving and four touchdowns.

We’ll have more regarding a new contract for Allen as the news is available.
