Report: Chargers WR Malcom Floyd Heading To Season-Ending IR

Update:

Ian Rapoport reports that Chargers WR Malcom Floyd is heading to season-ending injured reserve.

  • Floyd’s agent, Buddy Baker, confirmed that his client is preparing to return next season

Floyd suffered a neck injury during the team’s Week 2 win over the Eagles. He was expected to return in a few weeks, but the injury was fairly serious, so there always was a chance he could be done for the season.

The Chargers signed Lavelle Hawkins earlier in day to likely take his place.

ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that a  source has informed him that Chargers’ WR Malcom Floyd won’t return until Week 1 at the earliest.

Although Floyd reportedly received positive news regarding his knee, it’s unlikely that he’ll play in any of the team’s preseason games. There is still some question as to whether or not he’ll be able for the start of the season, but at least it’s still a possibility.

———-

Ian Rapoport reports that sources have informed him that “initial tests” revealed that Chargers WR Malcom Floyd has a knee sprain and not a torn ACL.

  • Floyd will get a second opinion at some point this week, but there could more information available tomorrow.

———–

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Chargers fear that WR Malcom Floyd has a torn ACL, which would likely end his 2013 season.

San Diego has already lost Danario Alexander for the season after he torn his ACL last week. The Chargers have Floyd penciled in as the No. 1 receiver on their most recent depth chart. Eddie Royal is listed as their No. 2 receiver, but it appears as though Vincent Brown and third-round pick Keenan Allen are in great position to take on a pretty larger roles for them this season.

There was talk that Robert Meachem could be on the chopping block, but depending on the severity of Floyd’s injury, Meachem’s roster spot could be saved.

Michael Gehlken of the U-T San Diego reports that Chargers WR Malcom Floyd was carted off the practice field on Monday with what appears to be a right knee injury.

  • Gehlken added that it “does not look good” as Floyd was on the ground and receiving treatment for “several minutes.”
  • Chris Wesseling of NFL.com wonders if free agent Brandon Lloyd could be an option for the Chargers, considering that he played under HC Mike McCoy while with the Broncos.
