Chargers WR Malcom Floyd’s Neck Injury Could Be Career-Ending

Michael Gehlken of the Union-Tribune San Diego reports that Chargers WR Malcom Floyd is still wearing a neck brace following an open-field hit he took back in Week 2 that ultimately ended his 2013 season.

According to Gehlken, doctors have explained to Floyd that players have come back from this type of injury in the past, so there is a chance he could resume his NFL career. However, Dr. Robert Watkins did tell him that his neck injury “potentially can be career ending.”

Floyd, 32, should know more regarding his status moving forward in the next month, but he had it clear that he hopes to back next season.

“I definitely want to play again,” Floyd said. “If my body allows me to play, I’m going to do it.

The Chargers were forced to rely on a largely unproven group of receivers this year after Floyd and Danario Alexander were lost for the season. Rookie Keenan Allen stepped up in a huge way and is in position to potentially win the Rookie of the Year award.

Floyd is under contract for another two years, but his age and the fact that he is coming off of a major neck injury could force the team to reconsider his status. It’s worth mentioning that Floyd offers plenty of size and has been a great weapon for Philip Rivers in recent years. He also has reasonable salaries of  $2.75 million (2014) and $3 million (2015) coming his way, although San Diego could use some additional cap space.
