Chiefs Could Allow QB Alex Smith To Move On After This Season?

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports explores a number of team’s backup quarterback situations in his most recent article.

Interestingly enough, La Canfora believes there is a chance that the Chiefs could allow QB Alex Smith to play out the final year of his contract and move on next season, despite sending the 49ers two second-round picks in return for Smith.

La Canfora specifically refers to Smith as a “Band-aid quarterback” and believes Chase Daniel or rookie Aaron Murray could end up being serviceable quarterbacks.

Contracts talks between the Chiefs and Smith reportedly been progressing “very, very slowly,” they are expected to continue in the coming months.

In the event that Chiefs and Smith are able to reach an agreement, La Canfora wouldn’t rule out Kansas City shopping Daniel, especially if a team were to suffer an injury at quarterback.

Smith, 29, is entering the final year of his current deal and will make $7.5 million for the 2014 season. He counts just as much against the Chiefs salary cap, so a long-term deal would offer them some cap relief.

In his first season with the Chiefs, Smith led them to playoffs and played great in their first-round matchup against the Colts before an incredible turnaround from Indy. Smith also set career highs in passing yards with 3,313, rushing yards (431) and touchdowns (23) while only throwing seven interceptions.
