Chiefs Cut WR Donnie Avery, Free Up $3.4M In Cap Space

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Kansas City Chiefs have released veteran WR Donnie Avery.

  • Rapoport adds that the Chiefs plan to target the receiver position this week.

Avery, 30, signed a three-year, $8.55 million contract with the Chiefs back in March of 2013. He wasa set to make a base salary of $2.7 million for the 2015 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Avery frees up $3.4 million in available cap space while creating $500,000 in dead money.

In 2014, Avery caught just 15 passes for 176 yards receiving and no touchdowns over the course of six games. Avery was dealing with a groin injury for a portion of the season, but he was also a healthy scratch at the end of the year.
