Chiefs DT Dontari Poe Underwent Back Surgery For Herniated Disk

Kansas City Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder told reporters on Tuesday that DT Dontari Poe suffered a herniated disk in his back and has since undergone surgery, per Terez A. Paylor.

  • Poe’s injury required two epidurals and was sustained at his home.
  • According to Paylor, Poe will be replaced by Jaye Howard while he’s out of the lineup.
  • As of now, the expectation is that Poe will be back for early in the season.

Poe, 24, is a former first-round pick of the Chiefs and is under team control for another two years. The Chiefs elected to pick up fifth-year option back in April, which will pay his approximately $6.1 million for the 2016 season.

Last season, Poe appeared in all 16 games for the Chiefs, accumulating 46 total tackles, and a career high 6.0 sacks in the process. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 39 overall defensive tackle out of  81 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Poe’s injury as the news is available.
