Chiefs First-Round Pick NT Dontari Poe Off To A Slow Start

Randy Covitz of the Kansas City Star reports that Chiefs first-round pick NT Dontari Poe has been working with the third-string defense in recent weeks.

“The young Poe, he’s still learning, and he gave good effort,” said head coach Romeo Crennel.  “He’s trying to learn to do the things the way we want them. He’s not there yet.

This is interesting because of the fact that some scouts believed that Poe was the most overrated player in this year’s draft. He had a phenomenal performance at this year’s Scouting Combine, but didn’t show the same kind of effectiveness while at Memphis. The Chiefs needed help at nose tackle, so the pick made sense from that angle, but it would certainly be a disappointment to see him play behind undrafted free agent Anthony Toribio and Jerrell Powe this season.
