Chiefs Keeping Kyle Orton?

NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi reports that the Kansas City Chiefs will “make an effort” to retain free agent-to-be Kyle Orton and have him compete with Matt Cassel for the teams starting quarterback job next season.

As we’ve mentioned a number of times, Rams OC Josh McDaniels has been linked to the Chiefs for a number of weeks now and has coached Orton while in Denver. He’s also coached Cassel so there’s plenty of connections here. Having Orton on board should push Cassel to earn the job next year while ensuring that they have a quality backup.

This idea makes so much sense that it probably won’t happen but on paper it looks like a great match.
