Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson Out For Season With Ruptured Achilles

Update:

Chiefs HC Andy Reid confirmed that LB Derrick Johnson suffered a ruptured Achilles during Thursday’s win over the Raiders and will miss the remainder of the season.

Reid didn’t rule out bringing back Justin March or Josh Mauga from injured reserve following the loss of Johnson.

The Chiefs will likely place Johnson on injured reserve in the coming days and add someone to their roster.

Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson had to be helped off the field during the second quarter of Thursday night’s game against the Raiders with a left leg injury.

Johnson went down with a non-contact injury and immediately tossed his helmet like he knew it was a serious injury.

Losing Johnson for any period of time would be a huge loss for the Chiefs’ defense.

Johnson, 34, is a former first-round pick of the Chiefs back in 2005. He’s currently in the first year of his three-year, $21 million contract that includes $9.75 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $1.5 million and $4.75 million over the next two years.

Entering tonight’s game, Johnson had recorded 89 tackles, one sack, an interception returned for a touchdown and three pass defenses over the course of 12 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 2o linebacker out of 89 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Johnson’s injury as the news is available.
