Chiefs Looking For Second-Round Pick & Another Future Pick In Trade For Alex Smith?

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media mentioned during an appearance on 1500 ESPN (per Matthew Coller) that after speaking to people at the Senior Bowl, the Chiefs could be looking for a second-round pick and another future pick in a trade for QB Alex Smith.

Smith figures to be a popular name mentioned in trade rumors this offseason, as the Chiefs have former first-round pick Patrick Mahomes ready to take over as their starting quarterback.

During the Pro Bowl, ESPN’s Louis Riddick (per Jay Skurski) identified the Jaguars and Bills as the two teams that could be interested in trading for Smith. The Browns, Cardinals and Broncos have also been tossed out as potential landing spots for Smith.

A few weeks ago, Smith told Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star that he’s hoping to be back in K.C. for the 2018 season, but he’s well aware of the circumstance and the fact that this is a business.

“I hope to stay there — I love where I’m at. I love the guys, I love the situation, but who knows?” Smith said. “Obviously this is a business. I’m not going to be ignorant of anything or naive to anything.

Smith is a popular name mentioned as a trade option for teams in need of a quarterback this offseason and says he’s aware of the speculation about his future.

“Obviously, there’s a lot of speculation out there on what’s going to happen, what could happen,” Smith said. “I don’t think anybody totally knows.”

Kansas City gave up two second-round picks for Smith back in and they should be able to recoup a good portion of that in a trade this offseason.

Smith, 33, is a former first-round pick of the 49ers back in 2005. After seven years in San Francisco, Smith was traded to the Chiefs in 2013.

Smith is in the fourth year of his five-year, $76 million contract that includes $45 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $10.8 million for the 2017 season.

In 2017, Smith appeared in 15 games for the Chiefs and threw for 4,042 yards while completing 67.5 percent of his passes to go along with 26 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed for 355 yards and a touchdown. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 7 quarterback out of 40 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding Smith as the news is available.
