Chiefs Have Made A “Big Commitment” To Justin Houston, Nothing Imminent

Update:

According to Ian Rapoport, the Chiefs and franchised OLB Justin Houston carry the most optimism in finalizing a long-term extension of the current franchised players pursuing a new contract before tomorrow’s deadline.

Rapoport mentions that the Chiefs have made a “big commitment” to Houston, although “nothing is certain” at this point in time.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that a source with knowledge of the situation says that the Chiefs and franchised OLB Justin Houston are currently “50-50” regarding long-term extension discussions.

Florio insists that neither of the two parties are at a “consensus” or “impasse“, though Houston is searching to swap out the current $13.1 million guaranteed under the franchise tag for next season, as well as the “promise” of a 20 percent raise to his 2016 salary, which will pay him over $15.7 million for that season.

Florio wrote yesterday that “nothing” was progressing with Houston’s extension, so it appears as though discussions have picked back up.

Kansas City has reportedly offered Houston “generational wealth” type of money to get an agreement in place. However, Houston is looking to be paid in the neighborhood of Texans DE J.J. Watt, who signed a six-year, $100 million contract with $51.8 million guaranteed a year ago.

The Chiefs have until Wednesday to negotiate a long-term deal with Houston.

Houston, 25, recorded 68 tackles, 22  sacks, four forced fumbles and five pass defenses over the course of 16 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 1 outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense this year by a wide margin.
