Chiefs, Patriots & Jaguars Could Be Options For Free Agent DE Red Bryant

Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reported a few days ago that a source informed him that the Chiefs could have interest in recently released DE Red Bryant.

The Chiefs could lose DE Tyson Jackson to free agency, which means there is a good chance that they’ll be looking for a replacement in the coming weeks. Bryant wasn’t a full-time player last season, but he is a solid run-defender who should be able to play in either defensive front.

The problem for Kansas City could be there limited cap space as they are projected to have around $9 million or so to work with.

Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston previously tossed out the Patriots and Jaguars as two other options for Bryant.

Reiss points to the fact that Patriots made a run at signing Bryant before he ultimately re-upped with the Seahawks back in 2012. The Patriots could use some defensive line depth and Bryant could help by taking some pressure of off the aging NT Vince Wilfork.

As for the Jaguars, Bryant’s former defensive coordinator, Gus Bradley, is now the head coach in Jacksonville, and should be in the market for upgrades across the board. You would have to think that any of the Seahawks free agents including WR Golden Tate and CB Walter Thurmond will be in play for Jacksonville.

In 2013, Bryant totaled 31 tackles and 1.5 sacks over the course of 15 games for the Seahawks. Pro Football Focus has Bryant rated as the No. 15 defensive end in a 4-3 system last year while being particularly strong against the run.

We have him listed as the No. 52 player in our Top 100 Free Agents list.
