Chiefs Place RB Jamaal Charles On Injured Reserve, Needs 2nd Surgery On His Knee

Field Yates of ESPN reports that the Chiefs have placed RB Jamaal Charles on injured reserve Tuesday.

  • Ian Rapoport reports that Charles’ visit with Dr. James Andrews showed that he will need a second surgery on his knee but the severity of his injury remains unclear.

It was clear that this move could be coming after Chiefs HC Andy Reid told reporters after Sunday’s game that Charles is going to see Dr. James Andrews this week regarding this knee injury. The plan was for Charles to have his knee rechecked after experiencing some issues this past week.

However, placing him on injured reserve will buy him some additional time to get his knee in the best shape, assuming he’s a candidate for return later on in the year.

Chiefs RB Spencer Ware left Sunday’s with a concussion, which promoted the team to sign Bishop Sankey off of the Patriots’ practice squad today.

Charles, 29, is in the third year of his four-year, $28 million contract that included $8.3 million guaranteed. He stands to make base salaries of $2.75 million (2016), and $3.75 million (2017) over the remainder of the contract.

This season, Charles has appeared in three games and rushed for 40 yards on 12 carries (3.3 YPC) to go along with two receptions for 14 yards receiving and a touchdown.
