Chiefs Placing CB Phillip Gaines On Season-Ending I.R. With Torn ACL

The Kansas City Chiefs are placing CB Phillip Gaines on season-ending injured reserve Wednesday after tests revealed that he sustained an ACL tear during Monday’s game, according to Terez A. Paylor.

On Tuesday, the Chiefs were hopeful that he had just suffered a knee sprain, but it appears as though it wound up being worse than they anticipated.

The Chiefs are getting CB Sean Smith back from suspension, but they’ll likely turn to Marcus Cooper or Jamell Fleming at nickelback moving forward.

Gaines, 24, was taken in the third round of last year’s draft and has three years remaining on his four-year, $2,824,112 rookie contract that included a $549,112 signing bonus. He stands to make a base salary of $510,000 for the 2015 season.

Gaines’ 2015 season comes to an end with him recording six tackles over the course of three games.
