Chiefs Release Veteran G Paul Fanaika

The Kansas City Chiefs officially released veteran G Paul Fanaika on Tuesday.

  • Aaron Wilson reports that the Chiefs and Fanaika discussed a pay cut before he was released, but Fanaika ultimately refused to reduce his compensation.

Fanaika, 30, is a former seventh-round pick of the Eagles back 2009. However, he lasted just a few months with in Philadelphia before he was waived and later signed to their practice squad.

After that, Fanaika had brief stints with the Redskins, Browns, Seahawks, and Cardinals before signing a three-year deal with the Chiefs in March of last year.

Fanaika was in the second year of his three-year, $6.5 million contract and was set to make a base salary of $1.5 million for the 2016 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing will free up $966,666 in available cap space while creating $1,166,667 in dead money.

Unfortunately, Fanaika was placed on season-ending injured reserve at the start of the 2015 season.

In 2015, he appeared in 14 games for the Cardinals and rates as the No. 71 guard out of 78 qualifying players, according to Pro Football Focus.
