Chiefs Place S Eric Berry On NFI List, Out For The Season

Update:

Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said that S Eric Berry may have lymphoma, which explains the sudden decision to place him on the non-football injury list, per Randy Covitz.

Berry was dealing with chest discomfort following Thursday’s loss to the Raiders and further testing revealed that he has a mass on the right side of his chest.

As of now, there no definitely diagnosis. However, Berry is scheduled to visit a lymphoma specialist at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta for evaluation.

Berry has released a statement regarding the situation:

I am truly thankful for all of the support from family, friends, coaches, teammates and the entire Chiefs kingdom. At first I was in shock with the diagnosis on Saturday and did not even want to miss a game, but I understand that right now I have to concentrate on a new opponent. I have great confidence in the doctors and the plan they are going to put in place for me to win this fight. I believe that I am in God’s hands and I have great peace in that. I know my coaches and teammates will hold things down here the rest of the season and until I am back running out of the tunnel at Arrowhead. I am so thankful and appreciative of being a part of this franchise and playing in front of the best fans in the NFL. I will be back!

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Kansas City Chiefs have placed S Eric Berry on the non-football injury list, which ends his 2014 season.

This is very surprising news as there had been no indication of the team’s placing Berry on the NFI list before this afternoon.

Schefter doesn’t offer a reason for the move, but I’m sure we’ll have an update in the near future.

Berry, 25, is in the fourth year of his five-year, $60 million contract that included $34 million guaranteed. He’ll make a bas salary of $5.155 million for the 2015 season.

Berry’s 2014 season ends with him recording 37 tackles and two pass defenses over the course of six games.
