NFL Places Kareem Hunt On Commissioner Exempt List, Opens Investigation

Update:

According to Ian Rapoport, neither the NFL nor the Chiefs had seen the video involving Kareem Hunt until it was published by TMZ today.

Rapoport says that the NFL made several attempts to obtain it, but the hotel said it was corporate policy to only turn it over to law enforcement.

Beyond that, Rapoport adds that the Cleveland Police Department would not provide it either.

Even though there were no charges filed against Hunt, the NFL reportedly continued its investigation which included contacting the alleged victims, but they didn’t respond, per Rapoport.

The NFL announced Friday that they’ve officially placed Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt on the NFL commissioner exempt list and begun an investigation including the review of new information that was made public today.

Here’s the statement from the NFL:

“The NFL has placed Kareem Hunt of the Kansas City Chiefs on the Commissioner
Exempt list, and as a result, he may not practice, play or attend games. The NFL’s
investigation, which began immediately following the incident in February, will include a
review of the new information that was made public today.”

Dave Skretta of the Associated Press, citing a person with knowledge of the move, reports that Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt appears to be headed to the NFL commissioner exempt list.

Skretta says that the move is expected to be made later this evening.

The commissioner exempt list prevents a player from practicing or attending games, but he’s allowed be at the team’s facility and take part in meetings, individual workouts, therapy and rehabilitation, and other permitted non-football activities.

Dan Graziano reports that the Chiefs sent RB Kareem Hunt home from the practice facility today upon learning of the release of the video.

According to Graziano, the most likely short-term resolution is that the NFL will place Hunt on the commissioner’s exempt list pending a final decision.

On Friday, TMZ Sports posted a surveillance video of Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt getting into a physical altercation with a 19-year-old woman at a Cleveland hotel.

In the video, the women is knocked to the ground and later kicked by Hunt. The incident occurred back in February, but no charges were filed in the matter.

Hunt was also involved in an incident this past June in which he allegedly punched a man at an Ohio resort, but no charges filed.

Hunt, 23, is a former third-round pick of the Chiefs back in 2017. He’s currently in the second year of his four-year, $3.263-million contract and set to make base salaries of $555,000 and $645,000 over the next two years of the agreement.

In 2018, Hunt has appeared in 11 games for the Chiefs and rushed for 824 yards on 181 carries (4.6 YPC) to go along with 26 receptions for 378 yards receiving and 14 total touchdowns.

We’ll have more regarding Hunt as the news is available.
