Chiefs Starting Rookie QB Patrick Mahomes In Week 17

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced Wednesday that they’re starting QB Patrick Mahomes for Sunday’s game against the Broncos, per BJ Kissel.

Reid added that he doesn’t have any expectations for Mahomes on Sunday, but he just wants him to get some reps, run, and lead the offense, per Kissel.

The Chiefs are locked into the No. 4 seed in the AFC, so there’s really nothing to play for this weekend and no downside to seeing what he can do with the opportunity.

It’s clear that Mahomes is the Chiefs’ quarterback of the future and he could take over for Alex Smith next year.

Mahomes, 22, was taken with the No. 10 overall pick by the Chiefs after they somewhat surprisingly traded up to get him in round one. In total, the Chiefs gave up first and third-round picks in 2017 to go along with another first-round pick in 2018 for Mahomes.

Some felt Mahomes was the best quarterback prospect in this year’s class and even compared him to Brett Favre for his big arm and gunslinger mentality.

According to OverTheCap.com, Mahomes will receive a four-year contract worth $16,425,962, which includes a signing bonus of $10,086,1526. The contract also has a fifth-year option for the team to consider in 2020.

During his college career, Mahomes threw for 11,252 yards while completing 63.5 percent of his passes to go along with 93 touchdowns and 29 interceptions. He also rushed for 845 yards and 22 touchdowns at Texas Tech.
