Chiefs Waive Third-Round DB KeiVarae Russell

Rand Getlin reports that the Chiefs have placed DB KeiVarae Russell on waivers Wednesday.

Getlin believes Russell could be claimed off of waivers by another team. However, should he pass through waivers, Russell would likely be signed to the Chiefs’ practice squad.

According to Getlin, Russell got caught in a numbers game, but it’s pretty rare for a team to move on from a top-100 pick after just a few months.

Russell, 22, was taken with the No. 74 overall pick a few months ago by the Chiefs. Russell is coming off of a broken right tibia he sustained back in November of last year.

Russell signed a four-year contract worth just over $3 million to go along with a signing bonus of around $800,000.

During his college career at Notre Dame, Russell recorded 169 tackles, seven tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, five interceptions and 12 passes defenses.
