Chip Kelly To Return As 49ers Head Coach Next Year, Won’t Pursue Oregon HC Job

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reported Sunday morning (via NinersNation.com) that 49ers HC Chip Kelly will not pursue the Oregon head-coaching job and will instead be back in San Francisco next year.

On Wednesday, Kelly confirmed that he had no plans to return to Oregon, so this shouldn’t come as a big surprise.

“No,” responded Kelly, via Eric Branch of SFGate.com.

Instead, Kelly said he’s focused on remaining in the NFL as the 49ers’ head coach.

“Yep,” Kelly said. “So we’re done with that, I hope.

“I haven’t talked to a college since I’ve been in the NFL, and that’s not my goal,” Kelly said at the time. “My goal is to be the head coach of the 49ers. That’s what I’m going to do. It surprises me that it continues to be a new story. It’s been the same story since I left four years ago. I’m not looking to go back and that’s what I’ve always said.”p[p;l no

Many have wondered if Kelly could return to his old job, considering that the 49ers are currently 1-10 and he had a great deal of success as Oregon’s head coach. However, Kelly has maintained that he wants to remain in the NFL and help San Francisco turn things around.

Some reports have said that there could be changes to the 49ers’ front office, which could leave Kelly in limbo but it sounds like there’s a good chance he’ll be given another year to show what he can do.

Kelly, 53, was hired by the Eagles back in 2013 as their head coach. He lasted just under three years in Philadelphia before he was fired during the 2015 season. The 49ers hired him as their head coach soon after.

Since taking the Eagles’ head-coaching job back in 2013, Kelly has produced a record of 27-31 (46.6 percent) as an NFL head coach including one playoff appearance while he was with the Eagles.
