Redskins Will Release TE Chris Cooley

The Washington Redskins and TE Chris Cooley have announced that they will be parting ways.

The Washington Redskins are releasing me today,” said Cooley. “This will be my last day as a Redskin.”

Earlier in the day, there was some optimism that the Redskins could end up keeping Cooley because of his versatility, but they obviously felt that it was time to go in a different direction. Cooley’s salary could have been one of the main obstacles.

Keith McMillan of the Washington Post writes that he “could see [Chris] Cooley being traded, but not outright cut.

McMillan adds that Chris Cooley is currently the only fullback on the team’s roster and his versatility should be enough to secure him a roster spot, despite the fact that he’ll make $3.8 million for this season.

Washington could always force him to take a pay cut to remain with the team. Cooley’s currently 30-years-old, but has dealt with a number of injuries in recent years, so even if the Redskins were able to find an interested team, they would be hard-pressed to secure much value in return for him.
