Chris Johnson Is Not Interested In Taking A Pay Cut To Stay With The Titans

Titans RB Chris Johnson told reporters on Thursday that there’s “no way” he’d take a pay cut this offseason to remain in Tennessee.

No way,” Johnson said when asked about a possibly pay cut, via the Nashville Tennessean. “I don’t feel like it’s all my fault. It’s a team effort.

There has been speculation for months now that Johnson could be a cap casualty this offseason and nothing has changed in recent weeks that will likely prevent this from happening.

Johnson, 28, signed a six-year contract worth $55.26 million that included $30 million guaranteed with the Titans back in 2011. He has a staggering base salary of $10 million coming his way in 2014 and releasing him would free up $4 million in cap space, according to Overthecap.com.

This season, Johnson’s yards-per-carry has dropped to 3.8, but he is just 50 yards away from his sixth-straight 1,00-yard season. Yardage totals don’t exactly mean as much as they use to, just as the running back position has seen it’s value decrease considerably in the past few years.

It seems very likely that the Titans could cut Johnson loose in the coming months.
