Raiders Have Contacted Christian Ponder, Turned Down Work Out For Eagles

Update:

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that the Raiders have already contacted QB Christian Ponder following the injury to QB Derek Carr.

Mortensen doesn’t off more details about Ponder possibly returning to the Raiders beyond that, but it would make sense for them to bring him back in the event Carr were to miss any time.

Carr will undergo an MRI today, so we should have a better idea of the extent of his injury at some point in the near future.

Chris Mortensen reported on ESPN (per Eliot Shorr-Parks) that free agent QB Christian Ponder was invited to workout for the Eagles last week, but he wound up turning them down.

  • Rand Getlin previously reported that the Eagles had interest in Ponder shortly after the news that he was among the Raiders’ final roster cuts.

However, it appears as though Ponder didn’t feel like this was the best move for him, at least right now.

Philadelphia has been taking a look at quarterbacks in the past week or so after they elected to trade Matt Barkley to the Cardinals for a late-round pick and cut Tim Tebow.

The Raiders might be willing to bring him back now that Derek Carr is dealing with a hand injury, so that’s at least something to keep an eye on in the coming days.

Ponder, 27, hasn’t come anywhere the type of player the Vikings were hoping he could be when they used the No. 12 overall pick on him back in 2011.

The Raiders signed him to a one-year, $2.25 million contract that included a $1.5 million signing bonus back in March.

Last year, Ponder appeared in just two games and threw for 222 yards while completing 50 percent of his passes to go along with no touchdowns and two interceptions.

We’ll have more regarding Ponder and potential options as the news is available.
