Chargers Claim QB Zach Mettenberger Off Waivers From Titans

The San Diego Chargers have claimed QB Zach Mettenberger off of waivers from the Titans on Tuesday, according to Adam Schefter.

The Chargers made plenty of sense for Mettenberger, seeing as this move will reunite him with Ken Whisenhunt, who coached him in Tennessee for the past few years.

San Diego now has a young quarterback to develop in the coming years.

Reports from Monday mentioned that the Titans actually made Mettenberger available for trade and were just looking for a late-round pick in return for him. However, no team was willing to part with even a seventh-round pick for Mettenberger.

It’s possible that these teams knew Mettenberger was going to end up on waivers at some point, and it was best for them to wait until later to grab him.

Mettenberger, 24, is a former sixth-round pick of the Titans back in 2014. He’s currently in the third year of his four-year, $2.345 million rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $600,000 for the 2016 season.

In 2015, Mettenberger appeared in seven games and threw for 935 yards while completing 60.8 percent of his passes to go along with four touchdowns and seven interceptions.
