According to Aaron Wilson, league sources believe that the Detroit Lions could be close to applying the franchise tag on DL Cliff Avril. Wilson stated, via twitter, that the deal could be done as soon as Monday,”barring a late breakthrough in talks.”
The tag is expected to be around $10.6 million for the 2012 season which seems to be well earned considering the numbers Avril put up in 2011. In a year where he had 11 sacks, 6 forced fumbles and 36 total tackles, Avril proved to be a dominant threat on a Lions defense, that prides itself in having an effective pass rush.
The help Ndamukong Suh, Nick Fairley and Kyle Vanden Bosch, were most definitely contributing factors in the success that Avril had last year, but never the less, if he is indeed tagged, he will continue to play a big role in Detroit’s defensive scheme in the upcoming season.
