Signs Pointing To Colin Kaepernick Remaining With 49ers

Mike Klis of 9News mentions that signs are now pointing to Colin Kaepernick staying with the 49ers, instead of being traded to the Broncos.

Klis points to the recent trades by the Rams and Eagles to move up for the top-two quarterback prospects in this year’s draft and the fact that the Broncos are hosting Brian Hoyer this week as the main reasons why a trade is less likely.

It was assumed that if the 49ers were to trade Kaepernick to the Broncos, they would likely come away with either Jared Goff or Carson Wentz in round one.

However, there’s likely zero chance of this happening now that the Rams and Eagles have paid huge premiums to draft quarterbacks at No. 1 and No. 2 overall.

This means that Kaepernick appears to be their best option at quarterback, even though they’ve said that he will have to compete with Blaine Gabbert for the starting job this summer.

Denver was reportedly asking Kaepernick to accept a pay cut of around $4 million, which is a lot considering that his salary is currently guaranteed. There also hasn’t been very much regarding a potential trade with the 49ers in recent days.

Kaepernick, 28, is in the third year of his seven-year, $126.97 million contract that included $61 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $13.9 million for the 2016 season.

While those numbers are impressive on their own, the contract is essentially a pay-as-you-go agreement that includes ways for San Francisco to walk away with limited repercussions, as long as Kaepernick is healthy.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Kaepernick would free up $8,493,493 in available cap space and create $7,397,260 in dead money.

In 2015, Kaepernick threw for 1,615 yards while completing 59.3 percent of his passes to go along with six touchdowns and five interceptions over the course of eight games. He also added 228 yards rushing and a touchdown.

We’ll have more regarding a potential Kaepernick trade as the news is available.
