Colin Kaepernick Unwilling To Take Pay Cut As Part Of Trade To Broncos, Talks Ongoing

Update:

Mike Klis of 9News reports that trade talks between the Broncos and 49ers for QB Colin Kaepernick are “still on.”

  • Klis adds that the two sides are just at a stalemate right now over who will pay a portion of Kaepernick’s salary.
  • Klis also points out that Kaepernick’s total salary in 2016 comes out to $14.3 million when you factor in his $400K workout bonus and $2 million bonus if he plays in all 16 games.

Troy Renck reports that the situation involving a potential trade for Colin Kaepernick remains fluid at this point in time, even after the news that Kaepernick is unwilling to take a pay cut to join the Broncos.

  • Renck adds that the Broncos are still “slow playing” the situation and showing patience.
  • Mike Garafolo mentions that until the Broncos either sign, draft, or trade for a legitimate starting quarterback, a deal involving Kaepernick can’t be ruled out.
  • According to Jeff Legwold, both sides continue to look for leverage in trade talks.

Jason Cole of B/R is reporting that Colin Kaepernick will not take a pay cut to facilitate a trade to the Broncos.

  • Beyond that, Cole mentions that the 49ers will not pay part of his salary as part of a trade agreement for Kaepernick.
  • Cole goes as far to say: “No deal with the Broncos.

Kaepernick officially reported for the start of offseason workouts on Monday, which isn’t all that surprising considering that he has a $400,000 workout bonus for 90 percent attendance.

Over the weekend, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the 49ers and Broncos had reached an agreement on the parameters of trade agreement involving Kaepernick, but they wanted him to take a $4.9 million pay cut to complete a trade.

It would have been surprising to see Kaepernick waive guaranteed money, even though some have made the case that he could be more successful with the Broncos.

According to Schefter, the Broncos and 49ers’ agreement included a mid-round pick.

However, it looks like Kaepernick could end up competing for the 49ers’ starting job with Blaine Gabbert this summer, barring a change in trade talks with the Broncos.

Kaepernick, 28, is in the third year of his seven-year, $126.97 million contract that included $61 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $13.9 million for the 2016 season.

While those numbers are impressive on their own, the contract is essentially a pay-as-you-go agreement that includes ways for San Francisco to walk away with limited repercussions, as long as Kaepernick is healthy.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Kaepernick would free up $8,493,493 in available cap space and create $7,397,260 in dead money.

In 2015, Kaepernick threw for 1,615 yards while completing 59.3 percent of his passes to go along with six touchdowns and five interceptions over the course of eight games. He also added 228 yards rushing and a touchdown.

We’ll have more regarding a Kaepernick trade as the news is available.
