Colts Bench RB Trent Richardson

Michael Silver of the NFL Network reported Sunday morning that the Colts are benching RB Trent Richardson and will instead start Donald Brown against the Titans.

  • Silver adds that Richardson will now be Brown’s backup.

A source told Ian Rapoport that that a “change needed to be made.” Despite the demotion, Rapoport added that the Colts still believe in Richardson moving forward, but are prepared to do what’s best for the team right now.

There is no question that Brown has been the much better running back since the Colts sent their 2014 first-round pick to the Browns in return for Richardson. While Richardson has had his issues, Silver reports that first-year OC Pep Hamilton will need to “step up his game” in the coming weeks.

Indianapolis has been a mess since Reggie Wayne went down, but there is plenty of blame to go around. Andrew Luck hasn’t been all that great either and the offensive line continues to be one of the worst units in the league.

It will be interesting to see what Brown is able to do with a larger workload given that he will be an unrestricted free agent following the season.
