Stephen Holder of the Indy Star reports that Colts CB Vontae Davis will likely have season-ending surgery after seeking additional medical opinions regarding his lingering groin injury.

Colts HC Chuck Pagano decided to bench Davis for Week 9 for what he called a coaches decision and adding that the cornerback “hasn’t played very well.”

However, Davis told reporters that he felt “disrespected” by Pagano’s decision to bench him for last week’s game.

“I’ve been here six years,” Davis said, via Holder. “We’ve had similar situations where I played hurt. These things happen. And I never got confronted and (no one) said, ‘Your play has slipped.’ Nothing. I was playing at a level that was acceptable.

“But now, my play slips and this? They should have come to me way earlier and said, ‘Vontae, you’re not yourself. You’re not playing well.’ I told the trainers my groin was not responding.”

Pagano insisted that it was a coaching decision, despite reports that came out that Davis was still dealing with a groin injury.

“It should be more about the respect. I’m a professional,” Davis said. “I’ve been in (the league) long enough. When I look at the situation, I feel like there was no respect. Knowing Chuck, I figured it would come from him. It really bothered me.”

Assuming Davis is, in fact, done for the year, you can expect the Colts to place him on injured reserve in the coming days and add someone to their roster in the coming days.

Davis, 29, is a former first-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2009. He spent three years in Miami before he was traded to the Colts for the 2012 season.

Davis is currently in the final year of his four-year, $36 million contract that included $20 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $9 million for the 2017 season. He’ll be an unrestricted free agent next March and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him move on.

In 2017, Davis has appeared in four games and recorded 17 tackles, no interceptions and a pass defense.
