Colts Face Tough Decision Regarding DE Dwight Freeney

Mike Florio Pro Football Talk reports that a league source has informed him that Colts DE Dwight Freeney has a ridiculous 2012 cap number of $19.035 million.

Florio mentions that this could lead to them parting way with the Pro Bowl defensive end.

It’s certainly a possibility, especially when you consider that the Colts just locked up DE Robert Mathis to a four-year deal that’s worth $36 million and the team is believed to be making a transition to a hybrid 3-4 defensive front. This would require Freeney to either move inside or play standing up and that’s really not something that I can see him doing.

Freeney still has another $30 million on his contract and is currently 32 years old. New head coach Chuck Pagano has said that he would like to keep him on their roster but I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that his name surfaces in trade rumors at some point during the offseason.
