Colts Fire OC Pep Hamilton

Mike Wells of ESPN reports that the Colts have fired OC Pep Hamilton on Tuesday.

Current associate head coach Rob Chudzinski will now assume Hamilton’s former duties as offensive coordinator.

Through the first eight weeks of the season, we have felt our offense hasn’t performed at the consistent level that we need,” said Colts HC Chuck Pagano, via the Colts’ official site. “Because of this we’ve decided to go in a different direction and relieve Pep Hamilton of his duties as offensive coordinator. As head coach of this team, it’s my responsibility to make sure I’m doing everything we can to put us in the best position to succeed. We thank Pep for his service to the team and wish him all the best.”

Regardless of the Colts 3-5 record at the midway point of the season, it is a largely surprising move by Indianapolis.

Hamilton lasted just two-and-a-half seasons with the Colts after signing with the team in 2013 following the departure of current Cardinals HC Bruce Arians.

Interesting enough, the Colts ranked No. 1 overall in passing yards-per-game in 2014, while also finishing third in total offense.

Adding to the chaos, Jason Cole of B/R reported last week that sources within the Colts say that owner Jim Irsay is “seriously discussing” the possibility of firing Pagano during the season, and listed Hamilton as a possible replacement if that were to occur.

While Pagano could still be on the hot-seat, the release of Hamilton creates a greater likelihood that he will remain with the team for the duration of the season.

At this point in time, the Colts rank No. 20 in the league in scoring, No. 16 in total offense and No. 24 in rushing.

  1. Now that Pagano has fired Pep, Grigson can fire Pagano, and Irsay can fire Grigson. The circle of life. Pep sucks, but Grigson has to go. Immediately.
