Colts Pick Up QB Andrew Luck’s Fifth-Year Option

The Indianapolis Colts announced Thursday that they have exercised QB Andrew Luck‘s fifth-year option.

This is really a no-brainer move for the Colts, even if they plan to sign Luck to a long-term contract in the coming months.

Luck’s fifth-year option will run Indy $16.155 million for the 2016 season, although this guaranteed only for injury and won’t prevent them from working out a long-term agreement.

The overall expectation around the league is that Luck will be the highest paid player in NFL history when all is said and done.

Luck, 25, has one year remaining on his four-year, $22.1 million rookie contract, which includes a base salary of $3,404,727 for the 2015 season.

In 2014, Luck threw for 4,761 yards while completing 61.7 percent of his passes to go along with 40 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has Luck rated as the No. 9 quarterback out of 39 qualifying players.
