Colts Place LB Josh McNary On Commissioner Exempt List & Promote WR Griff Whalen

The Indianapolis Colts announced Thursday that they have signed WR Griff Whalen off of their practice squad to the active roster and added DE Gannon Conway to the taxi squad.

The most notable move from the Colts is the fact that they have placed ILB Josh McNary on the Exempt/Commissioner Permission list.

Indianapolis requested permission from the NFL to place McNary on the exempt list after he was taken into custody Wednesday on one count of rape, one count of criminal confinement and one count of battery.

McNary was reportedly involved in an incident in which 29-year-old woman was raped at his apartment after drinking with McNary.

McNary’s lawyer said his client “unhesitatingly denies” all accusations made against him.

Joshua McNary unhesitatingly denies all accusations made against him. Following the public release of these allegations, Joshua immediately reported to law enforcement officials in a respectful and peaceful manner,” Edward F. Schrager said in a statement, via The Indianapolis Star.

“The charges and affidavit publicly disseminated on Wednesday afternoon are not evidence of wrongdoing, but simply one side’s story.”

The Colts placed Whalen on waivers back in November and signed RB Zurlon Tipton from their practice squad.

  • Whalen was later added to the team’s practice squad.

Whalen, 24, signed on with the Colts as an undrafted free agent out of Stanford back in 2012. He’s been on an off of the team’s practice squad since he entered the NFL.

This season, Whalen has appeared in 10 games and caught two passes for 23 yards. He has been primarily a special teams players and has totaled 566 return yards this season.
