Colts Place OLB John Simon On IR, Promote DL Anthony Johnson

The Indianapolis Colts announced that they’ve placed OLB John Simon on injured reserve and promoted DL Anthony Johnson to their active roster on Tuesday.

Simon, 27, is a former fourth-round pick of the Ravens back in 2013. He spent just over a year in Baltimore before he was waived at the start of the 2014 season and later signed on to the Ravens’ practice squad.

After Simon played out the 2016 season under a low-round restricted tender, the Colts signed him to a three-year, $14 million contract this past March.

In 2017, Simon appeared in nine games for the Colts and recorded 43 tackles, three sacks, an interception returned for a touchdown, and a pass defense. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 55 edge rusher out of 115 qualifying players.

Johnson, 24, originally signed on with the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent out of LSU back in May of 2014. He lasted just over a year in Miami before he was waived and later signed to the Redskins’ practice squad at the start of the 2015 season.

The Redskins brought Johnson back on a future/reserve contract and he eventually signed on with the Patriots shortly after the draft last year. After being added to the Patriots’ practice squad, the Jets signed him to their active roster last November.

Unfortunately, the Jets waived Johnson with an injury designation to make room for new DE Kony Ealy. during the preseason and he later reverted to their injured reserve list. New York later waived him from injured reserve and he eventually signed on to the Colts’ practice squad.

In 2016, Johnson appeared in 11 games for and recorded 12 tackles and no sacks.
