Colts Waive WR Griff Whalen, Sign RB Zurlon Tipton

Update:

The Colts announced Saturday that they have placed WR Griff Whalen on waivers on signed RB Zurlon Tipton from their practice squad.

Whalen, 24, signed on with the Colts as an undrafted free agent out of Stanford back in 2012. He’s been on an off of the team’s practice squad since he entered the NFL, so there is a good chance that he could be added to the taxi squad next week if he clears waivers.

This season, Whalen has appeared in 10 games and caught two passes for 23 yards. He has been primarily a special teams players and has totaled 566 return yards this season.

The addition of Josh Cribbs most likely made Whalen expendable.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Colts are expected to promote RB Zurlon Tipton from their practice squad ahead of Sunday’s game against the Jaguars.

Indianapolis unfortunately lost RB Ahmad Bradshaw for the season after he suffered a broken foot in Week 11. The Colts reportedly tried to claim RB Ben Tate off of waivers to replace him, but their waiver priority was much lower than the Vikings.

Tipton, 24, signed on with the Colts as an undrafted free agent out of Central Michigan. He was unable to make the final 53-man roster coming out of the preseason and was later signed to their practice squad.

During his four-year college career, Tipton ran for 2,468 yards on 461 carries (5.4 YPC) and contributed 52 receptions for 524 yards receiving and 35 total touchdowns.
