Colts Interviewing George Paton For GM Job On Wednesday, Others Still Pending

Update:

According to Ian Rapoport, the Colts will interview Vikings assistant GM George Paton on Wednesday for their GM job, then bring in Seahawks executives Trent Kirchner and Scott Fitterer on Thursday.

Additionally, Colts interim GM Jimmy Raye III will interview with Indianapolis afterwards. Rapoport also mentions that other candidates are still pending.

Albert Breer of TheMMQB.com reports that the Colts have also requested permission to interview Ravens assistant GM Eric DeCosta for their GM vacancy.

  • Tom Pelissero of USA Today reported earlier that the Colts have requested permission to interview Chiefs executive Chris Ballard.

DeCosta is another GM candidate who comes up every year as a top target for teams looking for new GMs. However, he has declined to meet with a number of teams to stay in his current role with the Ravens.

Breer points out that DeCosta is close with Colts HC Chuck Pagano, so the possibility exists that he could at least meet with the team in the coming weeks.

As for Ballard, he’s clearly a hot commodity in regards to GM opening but he turned down an opportunity to meet with the 49ers for their vacancy a few weeks ago, so we’ll have to see if he even meets with the Colts.

There have been rumors about Chiefs GM John Dorsey possibly returning to the Packers and taking over for their current GM Ted Thompson, which would leave Ballard in position to assume control over the Chiefs. Although, the possibility still exists that Dorsey could sign an extension along with HC Andy Reid at some point in the next year.

As of now, the Colts have requested permission to interview Packers executive Eliot Wolf, Seahawks executives Trent Kirchner and Scott Fitterer, Vikings assistant GM George Paton and Colts interim GM Jimmy Raye III.

Irsay is reportedly the one making the call on who will be the team’s next general manager, which some have interpreted as being a good sign he’ll go with Raye. However, he’ll at least give some other an opportunity to win him over for the position.

The main selling point with the Colts’ GM position is the fact that they can offer candidates the ability to build the team around QB Andrew Luck, which isn’t an opportunity that comes with every GM vacancy.

We’ll have more regarding the Colts’ GM search as the news is available.
