Colts Sign CB Patrick Robinson To A Three-Year, $14M Deal

The Indianapolis Colts announced Wednesday that they’ve agreed to terms with cornerback Patrick Robinson.

  • Brandon George reports that the Colts have signed Robinson to a three-year contract worth $14 million with $6 million guaranteed and $9 million paid out in the first two years.
  • For what it’s worth, Clarence Hill reports that the Cowboys offered Robinson a three-year, $13.5 million deal with roughly $5.5 million guaranteed.

“We’ve been interested in Patrick since early in free agency and we’re glad it finally came together,” said Colts General Manager Ryan Grigson. “We have some strong ties on our coaching staff with him so that familiarity is always a plus. He is a versatile, experienced and steady corner that gives us immediate help opposite Vontae. He was a fit on a number of levels in regards to overall skill, but also adds some strong intangibles. We’re happy with this addition to our team.

Reports from last night mentioned that the Cowboys reached an agreement in principle with Robinson last week, and signing with Dallas was considered a formality upon him visiting with them on Monday.

However, Robinson elected to change agents and take a visit to meet with the Colts on Wednesday.

Robinson released a statement explaining what happened with the Cowboys and the reported agreement they had with them, per Rand Getlin.

First and foremost, I’m thrilled to be the newest member of the Indianapolis Colts! This statement is intended to make clear, that prior to this point during my 2016 free agent process, I never agreed to a contract offer from any other NFL team. In addition, I never gave authorization to my former agent Kevin Cooner to agree to a contract offer by any NFL team. I have always conducted myself with the highest integrity and appreciation for the opportunities that I have been blessed with by playing in the NFL.

The Giants were also believed to have interest in him.

Robinson, 27, is a former first-round pick of the Saints back in 2010. He played out his rookie contract for the Saints before signing a one-year deal withe Chargers last year.

Robinson was one of the best available cornerbacks and could prove to be a value signing for the Colts.

In 2015, Robinson appeared in all 16 games for the Chargers and recorded 49 tackles, one interception, a forced fumble and eight pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 30 cornerback out of 111 qualifying players.

We had him featured in our Best Available Free Agents list.
