Colts Sign OLB Robert Mathis To A One-Year Extension

The Indianapolis Colts announced Tuesday that they have signed OLB Robert Mathis to a one-year contract extension.

  • This move will keep Mathis under team control through the 2016 season.
  • Albert Breer reports that Mathis will receive his full $6 million for the 2014 season while he remains on the NFI list.
  • Mathis now stands to make $6 million for the 2016 season, according to Breer.

Mathis’ 2014 season started with a four-game suspension for violating NFL’s policy on performance enhancing substance. He later tore his Achilles’ tendon a few weeks ago while working out in Atlanta.

Mathis, 33, is coming off of his best season of his 11-year NFL career and 59 tackles, 19.5 sacks, and eight forced fumbles. He ultimately finished second to Panthers ILB Luke Kuechly in the Defensive Player of the Year voting.

He had two years remaining on his four-year, $36 million contract that included $17 million guaranteed. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 2 outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense last year.
