Colts & WR T.Y. Hilton Negotiating New Deal, Hilton Targeting $14M Per Year

Jason Cole of B/R is reporting that the Colts and WR T.Y. Hilton are in the process of negotiating a long-term contract extension.

However, Hilton’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, recently mentioned that it’s unlikely the two sides will have an agreement in place before the start of training camp.

Even so, Cole mentions that Hilton could eventually secure a similar contract to the recent deals signed by Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomas. Cole adds that Hilton is looking for around $14 million per year in his contract.

The issue for Hilton is that he still has one year remaining on his rookie contract.

Cole believes something will eventually get done, but probably not this week.

Colts owner Jim Irsay told reporters over a month ago that he expects to have a long-term extension in place for Hilton “eventually,” per Mike Chappell.

However, the team invested a first-round pick in WR Phillip Dorsett and have other young talent at receiver such as Donte Moncrief and Duron Carter, so it will be interesting to see how much they’re willing to commit to Hilton.

Especially when you consider that the Colts will also need to lock up QB Andrew Luck to a record-setting contract and take care of LT Anthony Castonzo, TE Dwayne Allen and TE Coby Fleener.

Stephen Holder of the Indianapolis Star previously mentioned that he doesn’t see Hilton taking a hometown discount to be back with the Colts next year.

Hilton, 25, has one year remaining on his four-year, $2.642 million rookie contract, which includes a base salary of $665,000 for the 2015 season.

Last year, Hilton caught 82 passes for a career high 1,345 yards receiving and seven touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the N0. 10 receiver out of 110 qualifying players.
