Concern About Bills TE Charles Clay’s Future In The NFL Due To Knee Issues

Adam Schefter reports that there’s concern about Bills TE Charles Clay‘s long-term future in the NFL, due to issues with his knee.

Clay reportedly had to have his knee drained at least six times last year while playing for the Dolphins.

According to Schefter, multiple doctors had expressed concerns about Clay’s longevity, due to these knee issues.

The Dolphins elected to use their transition tag on him several months ago, but the Bills managed to pry him away with a serious financial commitment.

Clay, 26, signed a five-year, $38 million contract with the Bills back in March that included $20 million guaranteed. He’ll make a base salary of $3 million for the 2015 season.

The Bills included a $10 million roster bonus in the deal next year to go along with a $1.5 million base salary. After that, Clay will make base salaries of $4.5 million in the final two years.

He has a cap figure of $5 million for this season, but this figure ballons to $13.5 million next year and is fixed at $6.5 million in the final years of the agreement. It’s worth mentioning that there’s no guaranteed money included in Clay’s deal after the 2016 season.

In 2014, Clay appeared in 14 games for the Dolphins and caught 58 passes for 605 yards receiving and three touchdowns.
