Congress Could Hold Hearing Regarding NFL’s Handling Of Ray Rice Case

According to Mike Lillis of the TheHill.com, members of the House Oversight Committee are discussing the possibility of holding a hearing regarding the NFL’s handling of the Ray Rice assault case.

The NFL’s failure to appropriately respond to crimes and misconduct has harmed the prestige of the game and the millions of Americans who look up to these players as role models,” Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) said in a statement. “The NFL’s gross mishandling of the deplorable actions of Ray Rice is the latest example of how this insulated institution has incompetently dealt with serious issues.

If Congress elects to get involved in this situation, it would really ramp up pressure on the league, even though they are conducting an “independent” investigation of their own.

The investigation will led by former FBI Director Robert Mueller, but league still has two of Roger Goodell’s strongest supporters — Giants owner John Mara and Steelers owner Art Rooney II — overseeing the situation.

If the NFL wanted to put to rest concerns about a potential cover up, they should probably have elected to not include league owners to oversee the investigation.

We’ll have more regarding this situation as the news is available.
