Contract Comparison For QB Michael Vick

The New York Jets signed veteran QB Michael Vick to a one-year contract worth $5 million last week.

According to Tom Pelissero, Vick’s one-year deal includes $4 million guaranteed — $2 million signing bonus and a $2 million guaranteed base salary.

  • Pelissero adds that this really isn’t a lot of money given that backup quarterbacks were averaging around $3 million per year just last season.

Vick will count $4 million against the Jets 2014 salary cap, which won’t be much of an issue for them.

2014 quarterbacks signings:

  • Matt Cassel: two years, $10.5M total, $5.25M APY and $5.65M fully guaranteed.
  • Josh McCown: two years, $10M total, $5M APY and $4.75M fully guaranteed.
  • Charlie Whitehurst: two year, $4.25M total, $1.25M APY and $2M fully guaranteed.

2013 backup quarterback signings:

  • Chase Daniel: three years, $10M total, $3.33M APY, $3M guaranteed.
  • Drew Stanton: three years, $8.2M total, $2.733M APY, $3M guaranteed.
  • Matt Hasselbeck: two years, $7.250M, $3,625M APY, $3M guaranteed.

This is just a simple look at how Vick’s contract stacks up with the deals signed by quarterbacks in the past two years.
